Blankets for the Gulf

Giving hurricane victims
something to call their own.

PROJECT OVERVIEW and
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Goal

To collect hand-made blankets for Gulf Coast hurricane victims.

(Note: The original goal was 5,000 blankets. I've now learned that ANY amount will help. Just keep sending those blankets!)

You can read the delivery updates to learn about past deliveries and check out the Blanket Count to see how many we've collected so far!

Why handmade?

Handmade gifts are always special and a great way to show someone that you care about them. We can let Gulf Coast residents know that people all over the U.S. care about them by giving them a blanket stitched with love.

How will they be delivered?

The first delivery occurred on December 17, 2005. Read all about it here.

The second delivery occurred on March 17, 2006. Read all about it here.

I will continue to collect blankets and have many requests for adult-sized blankets.

What sizes & types of blankets are needed?

All sizes and types are welcome! Baby blankets, throws, twin bed size, extra large...all sizes, shapes and colors! They can be knitted, crocheted, quilted, sewn, or otherwise handmade. No-Sew Fleece blankets are very popular and can be made quite quickly. ADULT-SIZE BLANKETS ARE ESPECIALLY NEEDED.

If you're not ready to make an entire blanket, consider sending 8" squares to Close Knit Hugs.

Can I attach a note to my blanket?

Yes! You can attach a short note to your blanket, if you'd like. Even something as simple as "Made with Love by Sally" would be lovely and thoughtful.

What if I don't knit/sew/crochet?

You can help spread the word! Email your friends and family and let them know about this effort. You can also try your hand at a No-Sew Fleece Blanket. They're very popular with the recipients and they're easy to make! (They make a great Girl Scout or Youth Group project!)

Who started this project?

This project was started by Heather Foeh in Fredericksburg, Texas. I was so moved by a story on NPR's "All Things Considered" right after Katrina stuck (August 2005) that I knew I wanted to do something concrete besides send money. The idea for this project started bubbling and because of so many wonderful people across the U.S. (and even outside the U.S.!) it's been a successful and rewarding event.
